GET Group North America Stands Out for 18013-5-Compliant Mobile ID Technology in 2020

Waltham, Massachusetts, (Jan 25, 2021) – Despite the global challenges of COVID-19, GET Group North America (GET Group NA) continued to make inroads into the mobile ID industry in 2020. The company has successfully distinguished itself as a market leader for contactless mobile driver’s license (mDL) solutions. With over 20 years of experience in secure government credentials, GET Group NA has been a leading contributor to the 18013-5 mDL standard that ensures global interoperability and security.  By providing cryptographic proof of ID, not just a photo of an ID on a mobile device, GET Mobile ID allows verifiers to ensure the information is certified by the issuing authority (such as a DMV) and has not been tampered with.

“2020 was a year like no other and the need to minimize physical exchanges and reduce the spread of germs was paramount,” said Alex Kambanis, president and managing director, GET Group North America. “We are proudly committed to deploying privacy-enhancing, safe and secure mobile IDs and mobile driver’s licenses that support the contactless exchange of ID information and fully implement the 18013-5 standard.”

GET Group North America helped the Secure Technology Alliance (STA) develop a comprehensive white paper on the new ISO/IEC 18013-5 compliant mobile driver’s license. “The Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) and Ecosystem” addresses the potential of mDLs to fundamentally change the way identification credentials are issued and used in the U.S. For the second consecutive year with GET, David Kelts, director of mobile ID product development, was named one of the top contributors on the Secure Technology Alliance’s 2020 Honor Roll, which recognizes the leading individual and member company contributors to Alliance activities and projects this year.

“We are not just providing mobile ID and mobile driver’s license technology, we are helping to shape and define the criteria that will make mDLs widely accepted and universally trusted,” said David Kelts. “As states are adopting mobile driver’s licenses, choosing the best 18013-5 technology makes it simple for these forms of ID to be secure and accepted everywhere.”

GET Mobile ID for iOS and Android successfully passed a conformity assessment against ISO 18013-5 carried out by the Identity Management & Security division of UL, the global safety science leader. Conformity in an open mDL/mID ecosystem ensures the same level of trust as a traditional biometric passport.

The company was also pleased to welcome Geoff Slagle, a globally known patron and spokesperson for mobile driver’s license technology and former director of Identity Management for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), as President and Chief Business Development Officer of GET Group’s global mDL partner, Scytáles AB.

“I’ve spent the last decade assisting with the creation and shaping of policies and standards that make the implementation of mobile driver’s licenses possible, and now I want to support the execution of those advancements in the private sector,” said Geoff Slagle. “I am impressed by the global partnership Scytáles and GET Group have formed to produce mDLs that can be issued and used everywhere thanks to compliance with global identification standards.”

GET Group NA also increased its engagement with mDL and mID verifiers in 2020, exploring potential use cases for retailers, restaurants, pharmacies, TSA, financial institutions, and others where secure, contactless ID can allow for more personal and safer transactions.
